Mexican fishermen found twin gray whale calves joined together, the government said. The scientists who studied this extremely rare animal, which was discovered by chance, said, “This whale calf, known as a Siamese twin in humans, was abandoned by its mother shortly after birth.”
According to biologist Benito Bermudez, the two-headed, two-tailed calf was found alive in Ojo de L’Ebre Bay in the Baja California Peninsula, but died a few hours later. In order to further investigate this case, which is the first in history, scientists have taken samples of the whale’s calf’s skin, muscles, and whiskers, and have decided to preserve the rest.
